ZoomIt alternative for Windows, or the tool to run beside it
ZoomIt is free, made by Microsoft Sysinternals and still updated. It zooms, draws, records and times breaks. What it doesn’t do is show your audience where your cursor is or which keys you press. That’s the gap SHARA fills, and you can keep ZoomIt for everything else.
- Viewers lose your cursor. SHARA’s cursor halo with a flash on every click is free. ZoomIt’s docs list no cursor highlight.
- You teach shortcuts. The Smart Keystroke Pill shows them on screen and goes blank in password fields. ZoomIt has no keystroke display.
- You want ink over live apps by default, with no snapshot mode to remember, and every tool on a docked toolbar or one Ctrl+Space Wheel.
- You’d like to keep ZoomIt too. The two use different default hotkeys.
- •You need zoom for free. ZoomIt’s zoom and LiveZoom cost nothing; SHARA’s four zoom modes are Pro.
- •You record, snip or OCR with it. SHARA doesn’t record or read text; it takes screenshots and overlays.
- •You use DemoType, the break timer or typed text. SHARA has none of these.
- •You draw with touch on a tablet. ZoomIt documents touch and pen; SHARA works with a pen, with no pressure.

The three gaps people add SHARA to fill
A pointer people can follow
On a shared 4K screen, the Windows arrow shrinks to a few pixels. SHARA puts a Circle, Squircle or Rhombus halo around it and flashes every click.
Proof: free, on Ctrl+Win+H, and DPI-calibrated on mixed-scaling monitors.
Shortcuts your audience can read
ZoomIt can type prepared text with DemoType, but it can’t show what you just pressed. The Keystroke Pill shows chords as key chips, counts repeats like “Backspace ×5” and hides itself when a password field has focus.
Proof: six modes picked automatically; toggle with Ctrl+Win+T (Pro).
Live ink without choosing a mode
ZoomIt draws on a snapshot with Ctrl+2, or over the live screen with LiveDraw. SHARA always draws over live apps: orbit a model or scroll code under the ink. Ctrl+Z undoes your last stroke, and pressing Esc exits annotation instantly.
Proof: the Microsoft Certified Trainer below.
“SHARA has earned a permanent place in my training toolkit. The exceptionally smooth and clear writing, even at very small sizes, and the brilliant Ctrl+Space workflow that puts every tool right where my mouse is make live annotation remarkably effortless, letting me focus on teaching rather than managing the tool.”

Keep ZoomIt for its tools, add SHARA for the audience cues
They aren’t either/or. Here is who does which job in a typical demo.
ZoomIt defaults: Ctrl + a number
- ZoomCtrl+1
- DrawCtrl+2
- TimerCtrl+3
- LiveZoomCtrl+4
- LiveDrawCtrl+Shift+4
- RecordCtrl+5
- Snip / OCRCtrl+6Ctrl+Alt+6
- DemoTypeCtrl+7
- PanoramaCtrl+8
SHARA defaults: Ctrl+Win + a letter, Ctrl+Space
- WheelCtrl+Space
- DrawCtrl+Win+X
- ShapesCtrl+Win+W
- EraserCtrl+Win+Y
- Zoom lensCtrl+Win+G
- HaloCtrl+Win+H
- KeystrokesCtrl+Win+T
- Clear allCtrl+Win+B
- All on/offCtrl+Win+Z
- Colour keys (Pro)Alt+1toAlt+4
Hotkey conflicts, checked: none between the defaults. ZoomIt’s global shortcuts are Ctrl plus a number (with Shift or Alt variants); SHARA’s are Ctrl+Win plus a letter, Ctrl+Space and, in Pro, Alt+1 to Alt+4, which ZoomIt doesn’t use. Both use Ctrl+Z only while you’re drawing. If you’ve remapped either app, check your custom keys; both let you change them. We haven’t documented how the two overlays stack when both are active at once, so use one tool’s ink at a time.
Three steps, and ZoomIt stays exactly as it is
- Install SHARA free from the Microsoft Store.Leave ZoomIt (or PowerToys) running. Both sit in the tray until you call them. SHARA starts with a 14-day Pro trial.
- Turn on the two cues ZoomIt lacks.Press Ctrl+Win+H for the cursor halo and Ctrl+Win+T for the Keystroke Pill. Set halo size and colour in settings.
- Present with both.Ctrl+1 still zooms with ZoomIt. Ctrl+Space opens SHARA’s Wheel for Laser, Pen, Arrow and more. Ctrl+Win+Z switches all of SHARA off at once.

Disclosure and methodology: Mashyo makes SHARA. This compares documented features, not a benchmark. ZoomIt facts and default hotkeys come from the ZoomIt page on Microsoft Learn; “not in the docs” means Microsoft’s page doesn’t describe it. SHARA facts and hotkeys come from the app and our keyboard shortcut reference. ZoomIt updates often, so check its page for changes. Last updated: October 17, 2026.
