Which way to zoom in on Windows fits your job?

Windows has three different things people call zoom. They behave differently, so pick by what you want to enlarge and for whom.

Keys as Microsoft documents them for Magnifier (Magnifier keyboard shortcuts) and Edge (Edge keyboard shortcuts), checked November 1, 2026. SHARA’s key is from the app.

How to zoom in on Windows with Magnifier

Best for
Reading small text or detail on your own screen
Works on
Windows 10 and Windows 11, built in
Cost
Free, nothing to install
  1. Press Win+Plus (the Windows key and the plus sign). Magnifier turns on and the screen zooms in.
  2. Press Win+Plus again to zoom in further, or Win+Minus to zoom out.
  3. Hold Ctrl+Alt and turn the mouse wheel to zoom with the mouse instead.
  4. Press Ctrl+Alt with an arrow key to pan in that direction.
  5. Press Win+Esc to turn Magnifier off.

Note: Microsoft’s tables refer to the US keyboard layout, and other layouts may not match key for key. The shortcut page is labelled for Windows 10, while Microsoft’s main Magnifier article applies to Windows 10 and 11. Sources: shortcuts and Use Magnifier.

Magnifier views and keys

Magnifier shows the zoom in three ways: the full screen, a docked strip at the top, or a lens that follows your pointer. These are the keys, copied from Microsoft’s list.

Change how far each step zooms

Open Settings › Accessibility › Magnifier and change Zoom increments. Smaller steps give finer control. Microsoft’s Magnifier article describes this setting; the exact menu wording can vary a little between Windows builds.

Why does text look soft when I zoom in?

Zooming the whole screen enlarges what is already drawn, so small text can look soft the further you go. That is normal for a screen magnifier, and it is our explanation rather than a Microsoft statement. If you only need a page bigger, use app zoom below: the app redraws its text instead of stretching it.

How to zoom in on one app or web page

Best for
Making one page, document or app bigger
Keys
Ctrl+Plus, Ctrl+Minus, Ctrl+0
Limit
Only affects that page or app, and only apps that support it
  1. Click the page or window so it has focus.
  2. Press Ctrl+Plus to zoom in. Repeat for each step.
  3. Press Ctrl+Minus to zoom out.
  4. Press Ctrl+0 to go back to the default size.

Microsoft’s Edge shortcut list gives these keys for Edge. Many other browsers and apps follow the same convention, so if one doesn’t respond, look for zoom in its View menu. Display scale in Settings › System › Display › Scale is the permanent version: it resizes text, apps and windows together, so use it when you want everything bigger all day, not for one moment.

When Magnifier can’t: zoom in live while you present

Magnifier is a reading tool. It has no way to dim everything except the number you are explaining, and it has no vertical window to record for a short video. A free-for-14-days overlay adds those:

  • Free for your first 14 days: a lens that follows your cursor, Live Zoom up to 8×, a Spotlight that dims the rest of the screen, and a 9:16 window for vertical video.
  • Hold to zoom: Ctrl+Win+G opens your chosen mode and releasing it returns to normal. You can switch it to a toggle in Settings.
  • Free forever: the cursor halo and click flash, so people can find the pointer before you zoom.

Set up SHARA’s zoom

  1. Install SHARA free from the Microsoft Store. There is no account, and it waits in the background for a hotkey.
  2. Turn Windows Magnifier off with Win+Esc, so only one zoom is running.
  3. Hold Ctrl+Space to open the Wheel, then choose the Magnifier slice and pick Lens, Spotlight, Live Zoom or Broadcast.
  4. Hold Ctrl+Win+G over the part you are explaining. Release to return to normal.
  5. In Teams, Zoom or Meet, share your entire screen, not one window. A window share sends only that window, so the zoom isn’t included; see how to share your screen on Teams.

The lens follows the pointer over a busy table. The lens, Live Zoom and Spotlight are included in the 14-day trial.

Every mode is explained on the screen zoom page. Teachers who zoom in on a board or a document will find the same setup in SHARA for teachers, and the screen share test shows whether small text survives your call.

When SHARA isn’t the right fit

It is Windows only, and after the 14-day trial its zoom modes are a one-time upgrade. It is not an accessibility tool: if you need the screen enlarged because of low vision, Windows Magnifier is built for that, with Settings › Accessibility › Magnifier. A window share also leaves the zoom out.

Zoom in on Windows: FAQ

What is the shortcut to zoom in on Windows?

Press Win+Plus to turn on Magnifier and zoom in, then Win+Minus to zoom out. To zoom only the page in front of you, press Ctrl+Plus and Ctrl+Minus.

How do I zoom out on Windows?

In Magnifier, press Win+Minus, or Win+Esc to turn it off. In an app or browser, press Ctrl+Minus, or Ctrl+0 to return to the default size.

Why does text look blurry when I zoom in?

Zooming the whole screen enlarges what is already drawn, so small text can look soft. Use Ctrl+Plus in the app instead, so the app redraws its text at the larger size.

Is there a screen magnifier for low vision?

Yes. Windows includes Magnifier: open Settings › Accessibility › Magnifier and choose the zoom increments and view that suit you. It is the right tool for reading your own screen, and SHARA is for presenting.

Can I zoom in on part of the screen while presenting?

Yes. Windows Magnifier works, but SHARA’s lens, Live Zoom and Spotlight are made for it: hold Ctrl+Win+G and release to return. Share your entire screen so viewers see it.

Is SHARA free for zooming?

The cursor halo, click flash, Pen, Laser, Arrow, Text and Eraser are free forever. The zoom modes are free for your first 14 days, then a one-time purchase. Get SHARA from the Microsoft Store.

None of these worked: what now?

Check the key layout first: Microsoft’s tables use the US layout, and other layouts may differ. Then turn Magnifier on from Settings › Accessibility › Magnifier. If an app ignores Ctrl+Plus, look in its View menu.
