Big Text Display
Type a few words and they fill the screen, sized to fit. Open it full screen for “Quiet work”, “BRB” or “You’re muted”, or copy a link that shows the same message. Free, with no signup, and nothing you type is uploaded.
Press Esc to leave full screen. Enter starts a new line. Typing, colours, full screen and the link need JavaScript; without it the card shows the example above.
How to show big text on your screen
- Type your message. Use a few words. Press Enter to choose where a line breaks. Or tap an example such as “BRB” or “Questions?”.
- Pick a colour pair. Light, dark, yellow, green, blue or red. Each pair is high contrast; the table below gives the numbers.
- Open full screen. Press the green button on the display where people will look. The text grows to the largest size that fits. Press Esc to leave.
- Or share the link. Press Copy link and send it to another device or a colleague. They see the same message and colour. Change the text and copy the link again to update it.
In a video call, share the screen that shows the card. Nothing else is needed: the page is ordinary web content, so it needs no screen permission.
Which colours read best at a distance
Contrast is the difference in brightness between text and its background. The W3C’s accessibility guidelines ask for at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text (18 point, or 14 point bold). Every colour pair on this page clears 4.5:1; the contrast figures are our calculation from the W3C’s formula. Checked on October 31, 2026.
| Card colour | Text on background | Contrast ratio | WCAG 2.2 level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light | Aa #0D111C on #FFFFFF | 18.85:1 | AAA (7:1) |
| Dark | Aa #F0F4FF on #0B0D12 | 17.67:1 | AAA (7:1) |
| Yellow | Aa #000000 on #FFE100 | 16.02:1 | AAA (7:1) |
| Green | Aa #00FF7F on #000000 | 15.61:1 | AAA (7:1) |
| Blue | Aa #FFFFFF on #1F4FD8 | 6.63:1 | AA (4.5:1) |
| Red | Aa #FFFFFF on #C8003F | 5.95:1 | AA (4.5:1) |
| Avoid: mid grey | Aa #8B93AB on #FFFFFF | 3.06:1 | Below 4.5:1 |
How big is big enough?
Audio-visual designers commonly size basic text at 2% to 2.5% of the image height (Draper, April 27, 2022). On a screen 1080 pixels high that is about 22 to 27 pixels, our arithmetic. A short message here fills most of the screen height, many times that, so it stays readable from the back of a room.
What to put on the screen
| Moment | Message | Try this colour |
|---|---|---|
| Focus time in a shared room | Quiet work | Dark or red |
| Stepping away from a call | BRB | Yellow |
| Someone is talking on mute | You’re muted | Blue |
| End of a talk or lesson | Questions? | Green |
| Breaks and waiting rooms | Break: back in 10 minutes | Light |
| Noisy meeting | Please mute your mic | Red |
For a break with a running clock, use the presentation timer; for a class, the classroom timer.
Tips for big text that works
- Fewer words, bigger type. The text shrinks until every line fits, so three words look huge and a sentence looks smaller. Cut the message before you shrink the font.
- Choose your own line breaks. Press Enter to put “Back at” on one line and “2:00” on the next. Short lines fill a wide screen better.
- Match the room. A dark card is easier on the eyes in a dim room, and a light card suits a bright one. Yellow and green stand out from across a room.
- Test the share. Look at the card the way a viewer will: share the screen and check it on a second device. The screen share test shows what survives.
- Leave it running. While the card is full screen, the page asks your browser to keep the screen awake, where the browser allows it. It stops when you leave full screen.
Who it is for
Teachers and trainers
Show “Silent reading” or “Pairs, 5 minutes” on the classroom screen, then put the instruction away with Esc. See how teachers use SHARA for the rest of the lesson.
Remote and hybrid workers
Put “Quiet work” or “BRB” on a spare display, or share a “Back at 2:00” card while you step away from a call.
Privacy
The text you type is shown by your browser and is not uploaded. It is kept in two places on your side only: the part of the page address after the #, which browsers do not send to the website when they load a page, and this browser’s local storage, so the last message is there next time. Anyone you give the link to can read the message. The site counts visits and button use in aggregate and never records what you typed.
